Gangs & Anti Social Behaviour
During this workshop the participants will be asked to explore the reasons for people to join a gang. They will be asked to describe what a gang is. Are there different types of gang? Is belonging to a gang always good or always bad? Can the positive aspects of gang membership be duplicted without the group entering into criminal behaviors.
They will be asked to examine group behaviour, comparing this to behaviour of individuals. Would a group do something that each of the individuals might not?
The participants will be asked to explore how behaviour from an individual may be seen as perfectly innocent and yet the same behaviour from a group may appear threatening.
The wider social implications of group behaviour and the way that behavior is percieved by others outside the group will be explored.
What young people often consider perfectly innocent behaviour can be percieved by others as threatening and intimidating. Anti Social behavior can lead to whole areas being boycotted by adults which can then attract more groups of young people which in turn can lead to clashes between groups which is seen by others as more reason to be afraid to be near them. This fear can have a huge impact on whole neighbourhoods.
